Lovely property, only a few issues.
Overall we had a pretty great experience. The house was terrific and had plenty of space for a large party. It never felt crowded but still managed to feel cozy and provide enough space for group activities like cards and board games. The views are spectacular - the pictures truly don’t do them justice. I highly recommend taking one of the kayaks out onto the lake in the morning and soaking up the serenity. Cashiers is not too too far away, and the mountain roads leading to the cabin are perfectly manageable. We were able to fit three cars easily in the drive.
Caveats: Key lock - when we first arrived the key combination given to us via email was incorrect (we were able to contact them right away, but this could have been a problem) and needs to be updated. Trash - We were told ahead of time in the directions emailed to us that there is no trash service provided on the mountain and that we were responsible for taking the trash to another site. This is perfectly understandable in the mountains and not an issue. However, there were no additional directions provided about where to take the trash. We had to contact the property owners the night before leaving once realizing no specific directions were provided. After contacting the owners, we attempted to take the trash out the next morning before leaving pursuant to their directions but were unsuccessful because it appears that trash dumps are not open on sundays. Perhaps the owners were unaware, but this is info that would have been very helpful when discussed, or even included in the directions. We were forced to leave the trash behind and pay a $100 fee (almost $300), and this was frustrating for us as we did attempt to remove the trash and followed their directions precisely, even driving around the mountain more, but were caught unawares by the Sunday situation. My family was not keen on breaking the law and dumping it illegally so leaving it was our only option under the circumstances. For that reason we disagree with the fee charged on top of the rental price, even understanding the hassle to the owners. I recommend that more specific directions are provided for incoming families so they do not also run into this issue, as the fee was a little off putting after an otherwise wonderful trip.
All in all, the owners were generally responsive and helpful. With an update to the trash and key box directions, I’m sure folks will have a smoother experience in the future. It really is a lovely home
The best views of the lake! Wonderful home
We just got back from a long weekend at the Martin Home and are already looking forward to coming back! We truly enjoyed our stay at Lake Jocassee and this home. A few pointers below..
1. There are no gas stations on the lake, when bringing your own boat, bring gas with you or you can get stuck and the lake has spotty phone service.
2. If you are bringing your own boat like we did, you will have to dock it at the public ramp at Devils Fork State Park. Get there early or late, there is a boat ramp that is not gated so you can come when it is late and drop it off without waiting in line. We waited almost an hour to pick up the boat around 5PM.
3. Bring everything with you as the nearest grocery store is 40 minutes away...but it is the only one so everything is a lot more expensive.
4. It was hard for me to tell from the pictures the bedding arrangement of the house which has only 3 bedrooms (small but cozy), but sleeps 11. Next to the bedrooms upstairs there is a little alcove and one side there is a bunk bed, and the other side has a daybed but it is out in the open so its perfect for kids or teenagers not couples.
The screened in porch was lovely, so many picnic tables, plenty of places to sit and relax. The house is furnished so well, very pleasant to be in. Kitchen is well stocked ( a tea kettle would be a nice addition), and the open floor plan makes it easy for socializing. Everyone loved the lifts as well!
Thank you again for your beautiful home! We hope to come back soon!
This place is a true gem. The lake itself is of course as beautiful as it gets. But this house was incredible. Lots of room, very cozy and open. The beautiful huge screen porch with the incredible view was perfect for watching the sunset over the mountains or catching a mid-afternoon snooze. The trams from the house to the parking area and from the house to the dock really helped when it came time to haul gear and groceries. We've stayed at other properties at Jocassee, but this was the best.
View was beautiful, house was cozy, cost too high
We had a good weekend and enjoyed the house. It was definitely over-priced though, so while it was great we won’t be renting again. FYI you have to bring your own sheets, towels etc. The deck and elevator cars to get you up to the car and down to the lake were so helpful! The screened in porch was really nice! Technically sleeps 11 but common area is really full with 7 adults.
A marvelous lake experience!!
We were a family of 7 people who spent a week at Jocassee Lake (1st week of August 2017) . We are all in agreement that this place is a gem! Definitely a new "Happy place" for us. The biggest plusses are the beautiful, clear, uncrowded lake, the many waterfalls and the views from the house. The owner was quick to answer our questions. We rented a pontoon boat from Jocassee Keowee rentals- highly recommended to explore the lake and waterfalls. Cashiers is a quaint little town (30 min away) and the nearest grocery store. We would love to come back to see the Fall colors!
