Needs updating & a reminder to the owners that the leasee is in possession during the lease period.
Best part of the property are the 2 kayaks and a large, level back yard. According to the VRBO website, this property slept 14, had 5 bedrooms, 4 blowup beds and 3 showers. Upon arrival, we found five bedrooms and one single blowup bed. There were two bathrooms with showers and an additional half bath with no shower . The owners were on site using their boat and boat ramp and were informed of bed situatuion. They left and purchased one additional blowup bed for us. There seemed to be a general lack of maintenance and cleaning on the property. Lots of dusty surfaces and the garage was full of dirt that was impossible not to track in. We were aware of no Wi-Fi, but assumed there would be good cellular service. But in fact, we only had one bar of service on Verizon and some of our party needed to catch up on work and had to go into town to a coffee shop to accomplish this. We were also aware of the garbage situation, but it is hard to mentally translate 13 people and four days of garbage disposal when you live out of state. Proved to be a little bit of a problem. Also, we live in a state that does not do “returnables” so there was some confusion on that. We ended up taking all of our trash with us so we could be sure of getting our deposit back. The main garbage can for the house was a trash compactor that was very hard to open and did not have any compactor bags to use, just regular garbage bags. There were only 12 mismatched dinner plates and not enough small plates or bowls to go around. Bedding was hard to find with no directions left in the home as to location of bedding, etc. There had been a water leak in the basement bedroom and the carpet was wet and smelled moldy. On Saturday afternoon, the owner returned with another boat and 4 carfulls of friends for an afternoon and evening on the lake. They were back and forth from cars to the lake for several hours. Finally left with 2 boats so we felt that we could use the dock area. They all returned about 10:30 pm, loaded up 4 cars and left. We woke up Sunday morning to 2 boats at the dock. No Sunday swimming for us! I think the owners need to be informed that when you rent your property you are giving up the use of it for the rental period. I would think for the considerable daily rate charged another weekend could have been found to invite the owners friends over. Also, that rate should include Internet and garbage service. Will definitely be more careful IF I use VRBO again.
Spacious home with great water access
Our group consisted of age 7-70 and we had a good four nights in this home, but were disappointed that it didn't meet our expectations when comparing description/photos and current condition. Owners are obviously working on updating the home but should not be called luxury home. I would describe it as "comfortable". The bedrooms and baths were fine. AC worked great. Except for bedrooms, the furniture was obviously well used/outdated. Kitchen had some issues which have been reported to owner. A couch in basement and another on main floor did not lend itself to group gatherings in one location, but did allow for folks to spread out and "escape" rest of family when needed. Dining table only sat 6 but the large deck with two outdoor tables and chairs were awesome. We loved sitting with morning coffee and listening to the birds. We could not get any TV reception but there was a DVD player. The lower level pool table was a big hit with older teens, but several holes in wall surrounding table indicated that it probably should have been moved to where there was more room for those playing pool. The fire pit was nice and there were several lawn chairs provided. Plan to bring your own wood. The large flat yard allowed for game playing and running off energy. The kayaks and float provided by owners made the water more enjoyable. No sand beach for younger children, but walking into water was mostly sand bottom. The stairs from deck to backyard are not for small children without assistance (no railing on one side with cement below). Plan on burning waste paper in the fire pit (makes good fire starter) as you are asked to take garbage home with you. We had a fun week and very much enjoyed our stay. Home just needs some updating and better description with current photos in advertisement. I would probably stay again, but seems a bit overpriced when comparing to other "luxury" lake homes.
Great location on the water for kids
Great location on the water finger off the lake. Walk out beach area to the calm water-great for floating and relaxing. Nice flat back yard to play yard games. Two patio tables (seats 10) on the deck was nice to sit out in the morning with a gate at the top of the stairs. Little kids would need help walking down since there are no safety cover sides along the stairs. House was spacious with five bedrooms (one basement bedroom doesn't have registers in it so needs a fan/heater or keep door open to keep cool/warm depending on the time of the year) Kids can sleep in small loft area off bedrooms on air mattress, no bunk beds as posted. Three bathrooms but only two showers/bath. Ceiling fans in every room which was nice to keep house cool. Need a few updates inside but overall our family had a great relaxing stay with a great outdoor atmosphere -
Great for large family or multiple families
We stayed with multiple families with all age groups. There was alot of room in the house & outside for running & playing. The kayaks & raft were a huge hit. Plenty of room for everyone to fish & plenty chairs to sit around the fire pit. Sue was terrific to work with & always responded quickly to any questions. The location was perfect because it's a short drive from Des Moines & Panora has grocery store which is close by. Washer & dryer made it easier with little ones. Would definately stay again!
