Jan's place was beyond our expectations. The view, the sounds of the ocean, the cool breezes from Lake Nicaragua...What more can I say! The restaurant at Rancho is first class and everything we ate was fresh and delicious. Surfing was awesome and the beaches were clean. This was our first visit to Nicaragua but we've been to Costa Rica several times and I can tell you we won't be visiting Costa Rica as long as we can come to Nicaragua! No problems with civil unrest. Locals were all very nice and accommodated my terrible Spanish with smiles.
Beautiful slice of heaven
Jan was very accomodating and helpful with everything. The house was awsome. Short walk to serious left hand reef barrel. Watch the surf from practically anywhere in the house. Hang at the pool with a beer after a long day in the water and watch the sun go down. Outdoor speakers were fantastic. Outdoor shower to rinse off with, love that too. Colorados, Panga Drops, Playa Santana, and dont forget the Outer Reef at Popoyo! The Rancho Santana amenities are as good as you would find anywhere in the world, Pool, bocce, horseshoes, pool table. The restaurants were delicious. And yes, 4 wheel drive is indeed absolutely necessary. There's something here for everyone. Theres beginner to expert waves all within a short distance. I am already planning and saving for my trip back.
Fabulous home with incredible views
Great home in Rancho Santana. Close enough to walk to The Inn and surf beach, but very private. Perfect vacation. Owner Jan could not have been more accommodating.
The best surf trip of my life
We just got home from a week at Casa Ensuena. Wow, just wow! Seriously - this is the place to rent in Rancho Santana. This was my third trip to Nica and second to Rancho Santana. In my opinion this is the spot to be. The house is perfect with 2 bedrooms on the main level (sleeping 3-4) and another private guest house below (sleeping 1-2). There were 3 of us on this trip (4 if you count Jan, the owner, who came down on a swell hunt).
We love the Rancho Santana grounds because it offers plenty of swanky amenities you would want in a resort - beautiful clubhouse, massive pools, delicious meals, massages, yoga, etc. But I don't want to pay resort-style pricing and I certainly don't want condo style accommodations. So I look at private properties on the grounds to get the best of both worlds. Casa Ensuena is the perfect balance.
The house if perched on a small hill overlooking 1 of 5 surf breaks all within a short walk or drive (we hit them all and scored at each - everything from waist-chest to 3x overhead). This place has everything an American traveler would want/expect. Freezing cold central air (key), fully functioning kitchen, charcoal bbq, 40" TV and a cable package that gave us NFL on Sunday and NBA basketball, surround sound, a maid and pool/grounds cleaner who came daily,
There is also one thing the place came with that was so unique it made our trip absolute perfection - Jan the owner. Like I mentioned above he came down midway thru our stay and he sent us a note saying he would stay away respecting our privacy. Well, I went to introduce myself and so happy I did. He's the original owner and been going there for 10+ years. The amount of local knowledge on surf, food, roads, everything gave us what we needed to absolutely score. We ended up inviting him of for every meal and post surf beers. There is even an email chain between all of us now and we are frothing to go back, because he's still down there catching insane waves.
I would HIGHLY recommend this place if you are looking for a killer surf trip. The place is totally family friendly too. We will be going back as soon as we build up enough vacation time from work.
Surfline was a bust on calling swell down there. Use Solspot.com written report and couple that with MagicSeaweed.com to get the best info.
When driving in from Managua - GO THRU RIVAS. It's not longer like google maps says and is a paved road - TRUST ME! Also, you can hit the Maxi-Pali for supplies.
My husband and I loved our stay at Rancho Santana The views from the house were amazing and the hosts and staff very accommodating. We will definitely be returning.
