Great jumping off point for Big Bend.
Nice, rustic ranch house with great views. Our family really enjoyed our stay.
Starry Night Terlingua
Beautiful location. It felt like we had the desert and mountains all to ourselves. The directions were spot on and Daryl immediately answered my call with my questions. The house was as advertised rustic but clean. Thank you for sharing this property.
Rustic Home Near Big Bend NP
We selected this rental based on location near Big Bend NP and the fact that lodging is very limited close to entrance of park. This home is one step above glamping. It has great views and the basic amenities. However, the home is in need of a good cleaning and regular maintenance. We had to wash every dish before using. Spider webs and dust were everywhere. There were minor plumbing issues with sinks (no cold water in kitchen sink, slow draining sink in half bath). Window seals were leaking throughout the house which made weird noises when windy. One bed was held together with ratchet straps. For these reasons I gave 3 stars.
The lack of TV was okay but recommend bringing board games since there are none at the home. Also, there is no WiFi and cell phone coverage is spotty. The road is a gravel road that has been wash boarded. Highly recommend driving road in a vehicle with good tires and shocks. Agree with others that best to arrive in the daytime to find house. The house name is in Spanish (La Palamo Triste) which translates to The Sad Dove. This house is definitely rustic and may appeal to some. Decent find given the location and lack of lodging choices.
What more can I say that 50 reviews haven't already? The place was in a beautiful location, perfect for big bend. It was clean and comfortable for our family of 4 (2 small kids - 5 and 7). The kitchen was well stocked with little things (pots, pans, salt, pepper, oil, etc) that proved to be super convenient. We would definitely go back.
La Paloma Triste was awesome for my wife and me, my brother, and his wife for one week. The four of us absolutely loved it. We made breakfast every morning, then a picnic lunch before heading out to Big Bend for our daily hike/adventure. We returned after our outings and made dinner. Thus we spent hours and hours in the kitchen, and herein lies the only issues we had. The cold water in the kitchen sink was not working, and even though we alerted the property manager, it never got fixed. The kitchen/dining room windows were the only thing between beautiful views of desert vegetation, doves, quail, jack rabbits, snakes, etc. Those windows needed a good cleaning. In hindsight, we should have picked up some windex and cleaned them. The windows in the rest of the house don't really matter. When we weren't on the porch or in a bed/bath, we were in the kitchen/DR.
"The Dove" is in a perfect spot...far enough off the road to be very quiet, but close enough for easy access to the park and amenities as needed.
The beds were clean and comfy, the place was very tidy with plenty of desert charm. We felt very comfortable and safe. We were sad to leave.
BTW: We were not expecting cell coverage at all, but we got a 3g signal with Verizon, but nothing at all with AT&T.
Great place to come back to after exploring Big Bend. Close to the park and town. Fantastic night skies. House was perfect to accommodate our four adults. The drive in to the property from the highway could be tricky in bad weather or after dark. Recommend arriving first time before dark, if possible.
