Fishing get away
Great rental for our annual fishing trip on lake Androscoggin. Plenty of room for six people and a very comfortable home. The owner was onsite and super helpful as he had to work to get the docks in place for our 3 boats after having them damaged over the winter. Would recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing lake front stay.
Fantastic Week! Great Fun for the Entire Family!
The Loon Song house on Androscoggin Lake is one of the most beautiful lake houses we've ever seen. It was roomy and homey, and we almost felt like we were living in a house that belonged to us. My wife, Pat, and I were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary with our two children, their spouses, and our four grandchildren, and we could not have found a more perfect place. Pat and I had the master bedroom on the second floor, complete with a balcony that overlooked the lake. Every morning, we'd get coffee downstairs and then come back up and sit on the balcony, enjoying the view. There was a beach with a nice swimming area, kayaks, and a canoe, but two of us have our own canoes, so we were all able to go out canoeing whenever we wanted. Nearby was a small nature preserve with a nice hiking trail, and we took advantage of that as well. Our son fished off the dock, our youngest grandson had a ball capturing frogs (and releasing them), our teenage grandchildren enjoyed sleeping in, and our daughter did her best to keep up with her two and half year-year-old bundle of energy (a girl, of course). About a 15 minute walk away was Tubby's, known for their homemade ice cream and lobster rolls, both of which were amazing. Try the "Wholey-Moley, which is a combination of molasses and peanut butter. Delicious! As a family, we played games, ate together, talked and laughed, but there was ample time for everyone to follow whatever individual pursuits they wished to do. Our hosts, Bill and Bertie Messor were the nicest, most wonderful folks. They had a house next door, and tried to keep a low profile. I had to badger Bill into playing a game of horseshoes because I like to play but seldom get a chance. There was a great outdoor eating area, complete with a large gas grill, as well as a charcoal grill and a stone oven for making pizzas. Also on the property was an outdoor stage (the youngest kids put on a short "pioneer" play), and nestled among beautiful flowers, and next to a small pond with water trickling over rocks, was a charming art studio that had a sofa bed, where our son and daughter-in-law chose to sleep. All-in-all, this truly was the best decision Pat and I made as the way to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We had a glorious time and the week simply flew by. Loon Song house is the perfect get-away. Thanks, and our heartfelt appreciation to Bill, Bertie, and their daughter, Natalie, who handled the reservation.
Characterful Maine lake house
My family and I had a lovely weeklong stay here. The property was charming and the hosts (living next door) were gracious and generous. Our three kids (ages 8, 6, 4) had so many activities right from the front door (catching frogs, playing on the beach, swimming in the lake, painting in the art studio, performing on the little stage, not to mention fishing and boating with their dad) that I found myself with time to relax in the lovely lake breezes. Highly recommend!
Disappointing experience - can’t recommend this rental property
This year, I decided to rent Loon Song, even though the rental rate was more than twice the price I had been paying for another rental on the lake. I expected this to be an outstanding rental and was excited to share it with my family.
Unfortunately, the bad news started on Saturday morning when Natalie called me to let me know the cleaning company would not have the house ready at 4 PM - it would be closer to 4:30 PM. She also told me the gas grill in the outdoor kitchen wasn’t working but that her father would bring over a portable gas grill. The house wasn’t ready at 4:30 but the owner agreed to waive the cleaning fee, which was acceptable. The portable gas grill needed to be pressure washed and was not available for another day or two. The outdoor kitchen was dirty and in a state of disrepair. The gas grill and refrigerator were not working and we would have to wait for Althea to return on Tuesday or Wednesday to learn how to use the pizza oven. That lesson never happened.
During the walk through of the house, there were burnt out lights in a ceiling fixture and the fan in the downstairs bathroom didn’t work. As I unloaded the car, the owner handed me a box of light bulbs. For the price I was paying, I should not have to change out lightbulbs.
The septic alarm under the house went off twice. On Tuesday morning the owner came over to reset it. He then said he would teach me how to reset it before he left on a trip. That didn’t happen (and I shouldn’t have to do this). On Thursday night at 10:30, it went off again. Althea came over and said that I was having such bad luck that week but the good news was the money they got from the rental was helping children in Guatemala. No customer empathy (my vacation week was being impacted) and a completely tone deaf response to a major problem. Friday afternoon we came off the boat to learn more bad news - the bathrooms could not be used due to septic system repairs but we could use the bathrooms in the house next door.
This was a disappointing week. The outdoor kitchen was non-functional. The pictures on the website show a much brighter interior and much “cleaner” wall space. The walls and shelves are filled with family photos, figurines, steins, etc. It is not a house where I would be comfortable hosting my young nieces and nephews. The positive feature of the house was the screened-in front porch. That’s where we spent most of our time.
Given the issues, I can’t recommend Loon Song as a rental.
We are saddened that your experience at Loon Song wasn’t all you had hoped. Thank you for your willingness to provide feedback in such detail in your review. As a matter of clarity we have provided the following response, some of which is a bit detailed at times (our shortcoming of being detail-oriented people!).
The timing on the cleaning crew running late is on us (literally!). We demand that our home is absolutely clean before our guests enter, and our contract cleaning crew was late – plain and simple. We are pleased that you acknowledged a full waiving of the cleaning fee as a gesture of this omission and your inconvenience associated with a delayed (one hour) check-in time.
With respect to our outdoor kitchen, the associated amenities, and the picnic tables, this area was clean. The area, however, is located outside and under big, beautiful pine trees that shed needles most of the year.
The day after your arrival, we provided a spotless, gas grill as a back up to the built-in gas grill, which developed a problem the day before your arrival. This gas grill was in addition to our large, fully functional charcoal barbecue.
Instructions on the use of the wood burning oven are offered if desired by the guests. We asked you specifically to let us know if you wanted to use the wood fired oven. We received no request for this ‘extra'.
In 2007, Loon Song was fully restored to a four season home with modern conveniences, yet maintaining it's Victorian features. Similarly, as part of the restoration, we installed a modern, highly efficient septic system, which we fully maintain. Unfortunately, during your stay, the alarm float became stuck and required correction (this was not a maintenance issue). This correction was made quickly with minimal disruption to you; the timing on the temporary loss of the bathrooms during the repair was less than 15 minutes.
We have nurtured our property, the spectacular gardens, and treasure our beautiful lake, which is located only 30 feet from our home. There is nothing that brings us more joy than to have guests experience all of the amenities and pleasures that Loon Song offers.
Perfection is difficult to achieve in any business, but we try very hard to achieve perfection with each guest! We truly hope that our detailed responses will help other potential guests make informed decisions, based on correct information, when considering renting Loon Song!
Excellent Vacation Rental!
We had two families of 4 in mid-June and we had an amazing time! The house and amenities were terrific and the owners were great.
Loon Song...what a magical place!!
It is the perfect location to gather a large family. We were there to celebrate my daughter's Bates Graduation. Alberta and Bill greeted us upon arrival and went above and beyond to make our trip special. The view of the lake is breathtaking!
We kayaked, fished, and swam daily. We even cooked up the fish that we caught! Following spectacular sunsets, we would dine al fresco at the beautiful tables. Then, we would enjoy s'mores around the fire pit. The outdoor pizza oven was a big hit...a fun way to get everyone involved. The house is well equipped with everything necessary. The property is well maintained and filled with gorgeous flowers. We also enjoyed daily walks to Tubby's for outstanding lobstah rolls and ice cream.
It was truly a vacation we will never forget!!
