The apartment is a two story walk up. It is very clean with a good size kitchen and a small patio, which can be used as a dining area or a place to dry one's wash. The bedroom is in the back with a double bed (sleeps two) and trundle beds (sleeps three) in the living room, which is a bit quirky. It's ceiling slopes from approximately eight feet high at the kitchen to about three feet at the living room windows. This is a problem, if you are over six feet tall. That said, we were not in Carcassonne to stay in the apartment. Other than this, the apartment is very livable and grows on you. My wife, especially, liked the dressing/make-up table.
The owners are very nice. Although their English is rudimentary, it is much better than my inept French. We were able to communicate. My original communications with the owner were electronic using Google Translate. Everything worked out well. We kept in touch with the owners by phone, regarding our arrival.
We used the apartment as base camp for our travels in the area. We were early risers, so making breakfast and packing a “roady” lunch was a must as the restaurant across the street doesn’t open until 10:00AM. The kitchen is well equipped but lacked a toaster and an oven. The latter was not really necessary as there was a microwave but the former would have been nice. There is a neighborhood grocery about a block a block away, which has about everything you would need, wine, cheese, eggs, baguette, etc.
It is located three to four blocks from main entrance to the castle. There is limited parking at the castle.
There are a number of restaurants in the area within walking distance, with additional ones inside the castle.
One interesting thing we were charged 2.50 € per towel. If you want to avoid this charge, bring your own towels.
No air-conditioning. Could be a issue during a hot summer. The apartment did get warm the first night we were there but we opened the windows at either end and the it cooled down nicely.
If you are driving, parking in the area is limited. We were lucky that we were there in moderate busy time. The furthest we had to park was about a block away. During high season, it could be a bit of a problem.
Cute, Quirky and Excellent Location
Cute and quirky apartment in 3rd floor. Very comfortable bed plus a lovely interior terrace for reading, dining, drying clothes (we used the washer). Great location for walking to visit the medieval city or in town. Responsive and helpful owner. Would gladly stay there again if in the area. Free parking!
