An early spring retreat
What a great house and location! Stayed here with my fiancé and another couple, to unwind from our stressful winter. We arrived much later than planned; the owners had left lights on, and a small ‘welcome’ package, including some delicious organic wine, which a friend of theirs imports from France.
The house was immaculately clean; beautifully furnished but not precious - with a mix of vintage mid-century furniture, and new well designed pieces. The kitchen was well equipped - it’s not ‘design blog style’ , but it’s a good working kitchen, with all the right tools, and a comfortable deck right off of it. There’s a gas grill which we used. The beds were nice, the downstairs bed is a smaller than a queen - full sized? but our friends who are under 5’7” found it comfortable.
Location is great - very close to Great Barrington, but tucked away so you feel way out in the woods. It’s a long driveway, and it passes another house whose yard is in the midst of being landscaped, so that was a little rough looking, but once you’re at the house, you can’t see any of other property.
When we asked, the owners gave us lots of suggestions, about how to find the most interesting non-tourist things in the Berkshires - their suggestions were invaluable, we felt like we were the houseguests of a kind, thoughtful but eccentric! aunt and uncle - they were on call for information, but only when we asked. They live up the road on a really cool farm, and gave us produce, though it was early spring. They are big cyclists, we saw them zipping around on a tandem bike; they lent us some regular bikes, and we explored in the area based on their suggestions. Every place we went, if we mentioned ‘Naomi and Ron sent us’ , we were treated like special guests. It was delightful.
Will definitely be back, it was the best vacation we can remember!
Private and so, so quiet!
Being from Miami, we were initially SHOCKED that we rented a house with no a/c! (It never occurred to us to even ask. Doesn't everyone have central air capable of blowing frigid air from March to October?) But the owners were right ... temperatures drop significantly at night, and with cross-ventilation and a well-placed owner-provided fan blowing air, we slept comfortably. The house is exactly as advertised, but what can't be made too clear is the absolute privacy that you have at this home. We arrived late at night and followed Google Maps' directions down one dark curving road to another. When we turned off the main road onto the private gravel road that leads to the house, we were concerned that we were trespassing onto some farmer's private property. Passing one dark house then another, we optimistically kept driving through the woods. Eventually we came into a clearing and there was the house. (Thank you Ron for turning on the lights.) Although the owners had recently made some cosmetic changes to the exterior, it was clearly the right place. Our hosts had texted us that they had left some coffee beans (excellent!), local farm-fresh milk, fresh-baked bread, gazpacho (yummy!), eggs from their own chickens, and a chocolate bar; that plus a last-minute stop on our way to pick up some cheese, sausage, wine and beer, provided us with dinner and breakfast the following morning. (Good thing, because stores and restaurants close early in the Berkshires.) There's a great little deck right outside the kitchen, and we sat outside to appreciate the quiet, starry night. Kind of buggy but the next night we 1) turned off the exterior light, and 2) added citronella candles, and all was much-improved. Most important to us - comfortable king-sized bed upstairs in master BR, great linens, clean bathrooms with good water-pressure, excellent gas stove and coffee maker. Our hosts were very responsive to our many questions, and although we didn't have the chance to meet them, they thoughtfully dropped off some fresh beans and flowers towards the end of our stay. What could have been better? Window coverings! My husband turned to me in bed our first morning and said, "Did you know that it begins to get light about 4:30am here?" Yes, a little light control would help. (The downstairs bedroom had room-darkening shades, so my sister missed the sunrise when she spent the night.) This was our first vacation rental, and we'd absolutely do it again!
Hi Beth, thanks for your nice review. So sorry about the window shades! We just replaced the windows in that upstairs guest room, and I forgot to reinstall them. Really sorry! A % off as an apology when you return.
And re a/c - people are always surprised, and then get used to the idea of the house cooling down at night. There ARE a few weeks here and there where it stays hot at night, but mostly nights are cool. We've found if one has a house with A/C, it gets turned on, and then people stay in the house all day...there's not that connection to the idea of 'let's go outside for a walk down to the river', which is the quintessential Berkshires way of life. Glad you took the plunge here, and hope to meet you next time (I think we were traveling most of the time you were here, dropping our son off at an Outward Bound Course as well)
Thanks again! and happy travels,
Ron & Naomi B.

Lovely place; Ron was indeed attentive and brought us great coffee and farm-fresh veggies. Close to many attractions in an absolutely beautiful area.
