Quiet, comfortable and modern with slight compromises of privacy
This small one-bedroom house is comfortable, convenient and in excellent condition. It is worthy of five stars. I am assigning it four stars only because I would have appreciated more explicit information in the online description about the nature of the rental. Probably I should have realized that “private home” means it is the primary residence of the owners. Still, I was a bit surprised to learn upon my arrival for a week-long stay that the owners vacate the house and stay in another small residence about forty feet from the back door. They require daily access to the house to tend an aquarium, which is located in a room that is not accessible to renters. On the positive side, the owners are friendly, helpful and not intrusive. There is also potentially some advantage in their being close by, for example if a problem were to arise. If you are not bothered by a degree of awkwardness in displacing the owners and by a few inconveniences resulting from the arrangement, such as occasional lack of privacy on the rear deck and taking care not to let the cat in, the considerable advantages of this pleasant lodging are definitely worth considering. The house is located in a modest residential enclave about a 20-minute drive or MetroRail commute north of downtown. As a lover of quiet, I appreciated that no street noise can be heard. Guests have an off-street parking slot, and it is a fairly easy walk to the Crestview MetroRail station. A delightful Asian bakery/café, a well-stocked Korean grocery/supermarket, a brewpub, a couple of locally-owned coffee shops, and other places of interest are in walking distance. The original Threadgill’s Restaurant is only a five-minute drive, if you’re up for traditional Texas home cooking. However, the modern kitchen is well-equipped, and I enjoyed preparing meals there. A large flat screen TV offers a limited range of channels, including local stations and a couple of commercial movie channels. The carpeted bedroom has a wardrobe for use by guests, and the bed is comfortable. (I can’t recall if it’s queen or king.) Linens/towels are of excellent quality. The updated bathroom has a tub-shower with prompt and plentiful hot water. A digital thermostat for central air keeps the house comfortable. Wi-Fi is strong and dependable. With my current level of experience at the house I may well have chosen the property, despite the unexpected circumstances. It is a good value and an accommodating choice for one or two guests.
