Some positives but previous reviews do not accurately describe the reality of a stay at Tropicalia.
Tropicalia has a good location on the beach and in relation to Padre Ramos. The family who look after the house (Felix, Esther and son Derek) were excellent - welcoming, friendly and very helpful. The photograph advertising the property is out of date - the coconuts now overshadow it and flowering shrubs no longer appear out front ( however, this shade/coolness can be regarded as a positive). The ocean, with its rollers, seems essentially suitable for surfing rather than swimming.
The interior is basic but ok.
The house water is salty - it is not therefore possible to shower in fresh water and may account for the rusting of the cooker (making it a bit difficult to use at times) and cutlery - though a brisk onshore breeze will inevitably also carry sea spray.
The shower is subject to gecko droppings - in sufficient quantity to require cleaning out the shower tray each morning. Work surfaces also had to be cleaned.
In common with the rest of Nicaragua, the area around Tropicalia is inundated with discarded plastic. Sadly, the usual method used by local households to dispose of this, in addition to other waste, is to burn it. This can create unpleasant conditions - of particular concern to asthmatics.
The house itself is very secure. We were disturbed to learn on our first day on the beach, however, that two months previously a girl had been robbed there and were advised not to carry valuables. On our second morning, we were advised very seriously to be very careful when out walking.
The local shop was basic but adequately stocked to get by. Local fish was available.
The nearest bar/restaurant offered ,on our single visit, a very limited menu and was populated by loud and inebriated citizens of the USA.
My wife and I did not feel relaxed here and stayed for only two of the ten days booked. Cheryl was reasonable about a refund.
Thanks for the review. Although it wasn't as glowing as our other reviews, we need to know where our problems are so that we can fix them and continue to have a great property to stay. The worst problem is the water being salty and we are going down there to solve that problem. We will fix all problems that were mentioned in the review that are fixable.
Basic House- Beautiful Beach and Location
Overall our stay was okay. The house was basic. We stayed for month. It took us awhile to get accustomed to the area and what could be found there. We are a couple in our fifties and this was our first experience in Central America. It would have been nice to have been given a detailed info/welcome package on the house and the area. We would have then been prepared for gecko poop and scorpions! We made breakfasts and lunches at the house but found it difficult to cook many dinners besides pasta/rice there. It was just too hot to cook in the kitchen and it would take awhile for the little gas burners to cook anything. We soon learned to eat dinners in the local restaurants and hostels for very little money. The bed was comfortable enough and we really enjoyed the hammocks. The plus of the property is the location to the beach and the peacefulness of the property. We enjoyed fresh coconuts and coconut water most days but we were a little disappointed as we thought the property was filled with "fruit trees." Lots of coconuts yes, but we envisioned mangos, avocados etc. when the property was described as having fruit trees. Would we come back? Maybe. The beach is incredible and for very little money you can rent a surfboard and go out surfing right in front of the house. Surfing is good for beginners. Fishing with local fishermen was fun but did not catch a lot of fish. The mangrove kayak tour was very enjoyable. We also arranged a trip with a local young man up the Cosigüina Volcano. It was a pleasure to get to know some of the local families. If we were to return to this area, we would again rent this house. We met other people renting a couple of other properties and they had bat/cleanliness issues.
Thank you for your review. We appreciate hearing some constructive criticisms that can help us do better to make our guests happy. The fruit trees died because they have had a drought there and the water table is low for the last couple of years. That allows salt into the wells that we water our plants with and sometimes they don't survive. We will update our site now.
The geckos are a problem alright. They're good though because they catch and eat mosquitoes. We'll make sure to spray good again.
I appreciate hearing that this is the place that you would return to again if in the area. We look forward to renting to you again.
Jiquilillo Pacific Garden Bungalo
Jiquilillo is a beautiful area for the beach and surfing. Our property manager, Azqel, was very attentive to our needs. He was an asset we can never thank enough. Listen to his words of caution. The house is basic, but well equiped. The community works well together.
