A step back in time
We visited Andros for Crab Fest, but also to experience what we had heard was rural, ecotourism. We really only scratched the surface of Andros in our 3 day visit, but the houseboat was key. Situated in the back half of Fresh Creek, the level of privacy was amazing. We literally felt like we were the only people on the island. The creek is crystal Clear and provides great views, or fish and birds.
We were able to bring our 26 ft Grady White under the fixes bridge during mid tide, we needed 8 ft of clearance. Being able to dock our boat at the houseboat was critical, as there were no working marinas in the area. We also brought our inflatable boat which we used to explore the creek, dive the beautiful reef and float the creek with an evening cocktail.
The houseboat has 2 bedrooms upstairs that have AC, the rest of the boat has only fans, which is hot, but with the screen doors open, was manageable in late June. We looked at the experience as a camping trip and with this being said, loved the experience!
Gabrielle, the property owner, was wonderful. She met us for check in and drove us to get our rental car. The rental car guy was super nice and provided terrific service. Gabrielle brought us drinking ice and a 5 gallon bottle of water which is necessary for drinking. There is an ice house in Fresh Creek and for $10 you can get a big bag of drinking ice. Gabrielle lives next door, but separated from a lot of trees/bushes, we only saw them once, floating in the creek.
Advice- bring your own provisions. We didn’t see much in the way of grocery stores and certainly not “supplies”. Be prepared for smelly water in the boat, harmless, just smelly. Know that the bugs are relentless and you really can’t enjoy the outdoors at night, bring baby oil for the noseums and bug spray for mosquitoes. There are towels, pots/pans, a coffee pot that uses basket type filters and cooking utensils, but no can opener. The stove/oven is gas and works great! There is electricity for charging phones etc. and internet phone service works pretty good. No television or radios.
We LOVED our stay and already miss waking up in the morning to see dolphins playing in the creek. The Crab Fest was fun and we enjoyed eating at Hanks and Brigaders. Great trip!!
Loved having you guys to stay ! Perfect houseboat neighbours.
What a lovely stay!
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Sunset Point houseboat. The home is well-maintained and nicely decorated with local batik linens. The kitchen was well-stocked and easy to use. It was a pleasure meeting Gabrielle, who has been wonderful since we made our reservation, offering pointers and answering all of our questions (groceries, fishing licenses, rental cars, etc). We were well-prepared for a quiet stay without a wide range of grocery and dining options, and had everything we needed. Every morning we got up, put on our bathing suits, snorkeled and kayaked around the house, did a bit of exploring and put out a couple of fishing lines. Peter and Gabrielle supplied fresh drinking water and solar chargers for our stay and provided some history and interesting stories about Andros. We had a wonderful time exploring Andros from Nicholls Town to Andros Town, including Captain Morgan's Cave, North Andros Beach Resort, Forfar Field Station, Somerset Beach and Captain Bill's Blue Hole. We met many friendly people, especially Gabrielle (sorry we didn't get to meet Peter) and the bar tender at the North Andros Beach Resort (wish we had gotten his name). The winds on a couple of days prevented us from going on a snorkel trip to the barrier reef through Small Hope Bay Lodge and kept us from paddling too far into Fresh Creek, so it would have been great to have a few more days for exploring, but we had a fabulous 3.5 day trip! We would definitely visit again given the chance.
It was wonderful to meet Lacey and her family, lovely people who were just the best houseboat guests. We are so happy that you enjoyed your Andros stay.
We traveled to Andros to celebrate our son's high school graduation with a big spearfishing trip. We were not disappointed! With our small dive boat tied up along side, the Douglas houseboat was the ideal epicenter of activity for our team of 5. The ever changing natural scenery was wonderful. From sharks, to rays, to pods of dolphin, to bonefish, to blue holes, to huge black grouper and hog fish alike we saw and enjoyed it all.
The houseboat is nicely provisioned with proper cooking tools which made feasting on our catch not only manageable but enjoyable! The Douglas' were extremely agreeable and helpful without being at all intrusive and truly cared that we had a pleasant vacation while guests at their little piece of paradise.
We wish there were a bit more to do in the little towns that we visited but also very much appreciated the surprisingly remote nature of the island of Andros. A truly memorable place matched with a truly memorable place to stay.
I love off the grid and this place delivered it!
There were 6 of us and we loved our own personal aquarium. The only thing we didn't see was a flamingo😮 right off the deck we saw sharks, a dolphin, stingrays, turtle, lionfish, huge and little puffer fish and an amazing array of other tropical fish. The sunset was great every night. The Somerset Beach was our favorite. We saw two blue holes, Morgan's Bluff and several beaches. We were eaten alive by the insects but that is nature! The locals were charming. It was a very pleasant stay. Thank you Gabrielle and Peter.
Bahamas First Timer
Wow! Such a special place to stay and unplug from the world for a few days. This was our first visit to the Bahamas. We brought our 2 children (10 and 7) who loved every minute of the vacation. Nature explorations everyday! We kayaked off the boat house around Fresh creek which is large enough to explore for days. We paddled around a sunken ship and mangroves and saw many different fish and crabs in the clear blue water! My husband waded for bonefish on the flats around mangroves just down from the house boat. Our kids fished for hours each day off the deck as well and easily snorkeled around and under the house. Gabrielle and Peter have a deep love for and knowledge of the island and were available for advice, suggestions, directions and resources to make the experience a one of a kind adventure. They helped arrange car rental, island flights, beach trips, blue hole trips and guided fishing. The house has a charming rustic island feel and was very clean. Views of paradise abound from every room, porch and deck of this yellow house above water. The children loved the spiral stairs leading up to the air conditioned bedrooms which were a bonus for the occasional escape from 99 degree temps on some days, but usually we did not want to miss seeing anything so we where out on the deck, swimming, fishing, visiting local beaches or exploring the island. We highly recommend this one of a kind house as a base for exploring all Andros has to offer and hope to find our way back again soon.
Absolutely the best place to stay on Andros!
The houseboat is impeccably and lovingly maintained. It is where the owners raised there own children so you have a sense of family and history in the place. Peter and Gabrielle are two of the nicest and most genuine people we have met. Gabrielle answered my (many) questions about the property and the island. She was tremendously helpful in arranging and planning our trip. It was our son's 16th birthday while we were there and I was planning on making a box cake. Peter said that wasn't good enough and took it upon himself to find someone who made him a beautiful cake that he picked up and delivered to us. He also made and delivered to us one of the best meals we have had. The houseboat sits on the most perfect spot of the creek and is entirely private. We never saw another person in the entire creek during our week long stay. A few small boats went past but that was it. There are plenty of fish, birds and animals surrounding the houseboat so our 10 year olds had plenty to see whether just looking out one the many windows (all with screens) or just to snorkel and swim around. The creek is crystal clear and in pristine shape with a beautiful white sandy bottom that is filled with shells and fossilized remains of all types. My husband caught a bonefish from a nearby spot that he just walked to. We loved being able to fly fish, swim and snorkel right there from the houseboat. The brand new air-conditioning in two of three bedrooms gave us relief when we were hot and tired. We would all climb in the king size bed and read together when taking a break from being outside. We can't recommend this place more and getting to know the rich history of the houseboat and the island from Peter and Gabrielle was simply delightful!
It was a wonderful treat to meet you and the family. Thank you for choosing our houseboat and Andros for your vacation.
