Beautiful La Fortuna Retreat
Villa Hermosa was such a unique authentic Costa Rican experience! The main house we stayed in primarily in had no walls, but curtains for privacy and a completely secure, enclosed and air conditioned bedroom. So, it provided the best of both worlds: 1st world comfort for a good night’s sleep in the bedroom and a real outdoor experience in the rest of the house that allowed us to be close to nature, but not too close😊
The grounds and gardens were beautiful. We stayed in virtually every night and enjoyed the sounds of nature (there are many!), swimming pool, billiards, darts, and horse shoes. It was so fun to hang out on the patio in the evening and barbecue.
The hosts Judah and Michelle were attentive and helpful. On our arrival, they met us and gave us an overview of the area and suggested activities. Judah was always available to answer any questions during the trip as well as before to ensure we had a terrific time, which we did!
Sorry for the delay in response - have been doing the social media side of things for the villa.
We had a great time hosting you and was a pleasure to see the family taking advantage of all the wonderful things the villa has to offer.
Be in touch,
Judah & Michele
A private retreat away from the La Fortuna crowds. One of our favourite VRBO experiences so far!
For our 2nd trip to the La Fortuna area, we wanted an experience different from a hotel stay. Villa Hermosa suited us perfectly.
The property is gorgeous, just like the photos. We used the outdoor kitchen to prepare meals, and ate them at the large table. This outdoor space was also where we relaxed when rain showers arrived, or if we needed some shade.
The king bed provided a restful sleep. Our 12yo son found the queen bed comfortable too. The A/C was a welcome treat after a full day of activities in the Costa Rican sun! The shower in the bathroom was huge, with plenty of hot water available. Most nights our son stayed in Villa Toucan, at the back of the property. It also has modern bathroom and lighting fixtures, and although it had no A/C he was comfortable at night.
The pool area is perfect, and very private. The water is crystal clear and the waterfall and sunken lounge in the pool added to the relaxed vibe. This was definitely our favourite place to hang out.
This place is perfect for nature lovers. We saw and heard many birds during the daytime. At night the frogs, cicadas, and other creatures could be heard. We were fascinated by the leaf-cutter ants tracing paths to and from their colonies. We had NO issues with mosquitoes at the property or at any locations we visited during our stay.
Judah and Michele were such great hosts. Through the booking process, Judah was quick to respond to our questions. They do arrange transportation and tours, but it was more like having a full concierge service available. They have a great rapport with local businesses, and they know which ones to recommend. We did three tours and spent 2 days at The Springs Resort. All our experiences were top-notch. They had our rental car delivered the morning after we arrived. Having all this pre-arranged made our stay worry-free. They were nearby during our stay, and were available to assist if needed.
Finally, we need to mention Mario, their all-star driver! He picked us up from the airport and got us to Villa Hermosa safely. He also drove us to Manuel Antonio after our first week. On both trips, we stopped for dinner and groceries, and he even pulled over to point out a sloth he spotted in a tree! Judah and Michele are lucky to have Mario as their go-to driver.
We can't recommend Villa Hermosa enough. It was the perfect mix of nature, privacy, and relaxation for our family vacation. Thank you so much, Judah and Michele, for hosting us!

Hi Todd, Margo & Alex,
My mother and I greatly enjoyed having you and we think of you often.
Let's keep in touch.

Home away from home near La Fortuna
Our family of four spent a few days at Villa Hermosa and found it was a great base from which we could explore the Arenal Volcano area. The pool and open kitchen/lounge area were very peaceful and we enjoyed seeing a variety of birds during our stay. The kitchen is equipped well and the nearby grocery stores are great, so we ended up cooking breakfast and dinner during our entire stay. The Springs Resort is quite close and we fully enjoyed our two-day pass there. It was relaxing, uncrowded and turned out being a favorite destination for our boys. Judah and Michelle were of immense help in arranging our car rental and booking all of our tours during our stay in the area. Of note though is that the Villa Toucan is quite a distance from the main house. Our initial plan to have both kids stay in Toucan was ditched when we realized how far away they would be. All in all, we thought this was a great spot and would highly recommend it!
So glad your stay with us was fun, meaningful & a success.
The distance of the toucan to the pool/villa hermosa seems to be quite subjective interestingly.
Was just responding to another wonderful guest/family review from Todd of Canada whose son Alex was quite comfortable & content in the toucan (with both beds to himself) while Todd & Margo enjoyed their privacy in the VH (villa hermosa).
While walking the manicured grounds yesterday I casually walked from the toucan to the pool/VH & arrived in 45 secs max.
Perhaps they took the longer path near the meditation bench?
Anyhow, most important is that you enjoyed - our goal as much as yours :-)
Nice Affordable Option for La Fortuna
We very much enjoyed our stay at Villa Hermosa while visiting La Fortuna/Arenal. We had Judah's driver, Mario, pick us up at the Liberia airport which was very helpful considering it would have been difficult to find Villa Hermosa in the dark. The wildlife around Villa Hermosa was exciting to observe. We spotted a sloth carrying her baby while sitting at the pool! Villa Hermosa was a great fit for us since we were traveling with three teenagers. They enjoyed playing pool and darts in the game room. Judah and Michele were available for questions throughout our stay and also communicated through WhatsApp. We booked ziplining and the Springs Resort two day pass through Judah, both highlights. We enjoyed the Arenal 1968 trail hike and visiting the La Fortuna Waterfall and Mistico Hanging Bridges Park. Our fav restaurants included The Red Frog Coffee Roasters (awesome coffee and breakfast), Pollo Fortuneño and The Lava Lounge. Unfortunately, the car we rented through Judah was upgraded from a five seater to a seven seater and cost us nearly double our quoted price. We were unable to downgrade through Alamo because they did not have a five seater available.
It was our sincere pleasure to host you and your family and we are so glad that you took full advantage of the range of activities at the VH and in the Fortuna/Arenal area.
The sloth sighting from the pool was pretty amazing indeed.
When a family is exactly 5 people, 'it can go either way' as far as booking a 5 or 7 seater as it depends mainly on the volume of the luggage. In your case, Alamo did decide the 7 seater was necessary, therefore the higher price than the 5 seater. And yes, given the high season there were a limited supply of vehicles with all companies in CR.
Despite the miscommunication, they remain head & shoulders above the rest, so you certainly were in good hands :-) And I was able to secure you the 15% villa hermosa guest insurance discount to help as well.
Things are not always as they appear
The house is nicely situated in the country side away from all the shops and sites of La Fortuna. It is, at this point, not on digital map tools, so navigation becomes part of the journey. However, once you master the gravel driving, it is pretty quick to get to town. Traffic starts early on this road, so be aware that it is fairly noisy if you seek solitude.
The property itself is a maturing garden with a nice pool and surrounding deck. There is a pathway taking you though the property and you can see a variety of birds and the pond is abundant with frogs.
As for the house, it is somewhat different. First, as the description indicates, the common area is open and has no walls. There is a dining area, a seating area, and a couple of high tables. It has a counter with a raised shelf and fridge. To the side is a bbq/two burning cook top. There is also a very small sink. The kind of sink you can rinse glasses with, but it is not a dish washing sink. It is more set up as a bar, perfect for serving drinks. But as a house, it lacks a few basic amenities. The tiny sink had no plug, so we had to do dishes in a bucket. Also, there are no cupboards to put stuff away, so food has to be left out or stored in the fridge. I realize this sounds like a small problem but it starts to become more like camping than staying in a house. The bedroom was directly off the “kitchen” and fine for a couple, but we were a family and privacy was not optional. The bathroom was off the bedroom, so if you needed to use it, you had to go through the bedroom to get there. Again, that is fine if you are a couple, but with our extended family, everybody was walking in and out of the bedroom to use the bathroom.
Of note: In the welcome binder, it was clearly printed ‘$15 for full service laundry’. We had a load and arranged it to be done. After, the caretaker then stated that it cost $50. He stated that the volume was actually two loads at $25/load. But it was clearly printed that the cost was $15. We contacted the property owner to clarify and were told that it was $25/load and that he just hadn’t updated the binder. Of course I realize it is only a $20 difference. But it is the principle of customer service. If the price changed, and you didn’t tell us, why is it our fault? For example, if you went to a restaurant and the price of the food was $10 and you get a bill for $30…and the owner said “well, I just haven’t updated the menu”, would you go back?
Neither will we.
Thanks for the helpful review.
The Villa Hermosa is accurately described on the HomeAway listing.
We advertise the Villa as what it is. Unfortunately, the things you didn’t enjoy about it are what it is and what we advertise: open air, nature filled with birds, etc. It is not a closed in hotel for sure, nor is it at all like camping.
Most of our guests have no problem with the navigation given the detailed instructions that I send out ahead of time.
There are some Costa Rican commuters who work at The Springs Resort so, just for that hour it can be helpful to have ear plugs or to use the A/C for white noise.
I am sorry that I was travelling on business during your stay - otherwise, I could have explained more clearly that the bodega offers plenty of storage space for extra food items.
The Villa Hermosa is not a luxury hotel but it is certainly not camping either. Most of our guests are thrilled to have the experience of staying close to abundant nature while having the comfort and privacy of the Villa and ability to share meals and read books outside in peace and quiet.
Most of our families enjoy both the Villa Hermosa and Villa Toucan so there is no problem in each family member having space and privacy when they need it.
Because we accomodate up to 7 people in both Villa's, it is important that not everyone stay in Villa Hermosa only as it sounds like your family did.
Addressing your concern with the laundry - we apologize for what the laundry cost is. We do not regularly provide laundry service, but will provide it upon special request. The price is extra in accordance with our housekeeper and her charges. The price increase from $15 per load (washed, dryed and folded) to $25 per load is due to the increase in the cost of electricity and water in our area.
An important point here is that you can always contact me via phone, text or email to address any concerns so we can find a fair resolution. I would have appreciated the opportunity to explain the above policy with the laundry but I simply received a text expressing your dissatisfaction without the ability to rectify the situation according to your needs at the moment.
The vast majority of our guests cannot wait to return to Villa Hermosa which is clear from our 99% of our reviews dating back to 2010, so I am sorry that you will not return but there are a percentage of guests who are looking for something other than what we provide and there is nothing wrong with that.
It’s all about the pool - the rest, not so much.
First - the pool is marvellous. Clean, soft water with a beautiful waterfall feature. The gardens are very nice. There is a “jungle garden” behind the villa and it is beautifully kept, raked and clear of debris with groomed gravel paths wandering through. Misheal, the caretaker, walked me through the paths on arrival.
The not so good...the villa consists of an enclosed bedroom and bathroom with an a/c unit in the bedroom. The bedroom holds both a king and queen sized bed, an armoire with a tiny safe (sufficient for a wallet and cell phone, too small for an ipad or laptop), a chair and a dresser. There is a deadbolt on the bedroom door. The windows are bolted shut and the owner’s welcome letter recommends that you keep the door closed at all times to stop mosquitoes. Between the lack of ventilation and being closed-in with a low ceiling, it was not a pleasant place to spend time other than sleeping and showering. The bed is very hard. The shower is hot, but there is no hot water for hand washing at the sink.
On to the living area - it has curtains on two sides and no walls. The remaining two sides face the pool and garden and are fully open. There is one ceiling fan between the living and kitchen areas, so opening the drapes helps get a breeze. The sofa and chairs are very hard and have thin cushions. There were two rocking chairs that were more comfortable.
The kitchen consists of a fridge/freezer, a sink with only cold water and no stopper for the drain, and a barbecue with two propane burners on the side. We had to heat water in a large pot and wash up the rest of the dishes in the pot. I found that only one of the burners created enough heat to boil water so both cooking and washing-up required some planning. The property is gated, but some of our food disappeared from the refrigerator during our stay. There is a small but adequate grocery store 500 meters away. For anything else, the infamous road! We had an SUV and it bottomed out twice while cautiously driving there - the road can be navigated, but carefully.
The owner double-booked the property for our final night and was going to put another family with kids in the caretaker’s house on the same property. After some discussion, we agreed to leave early and have our last night refunded.
Summary: beautiful outdoor space, but the comfort level for staying there is about the same as camping (with the benefits of a/c, shower, flush toilet and fridge).
We are glad you enjoyed the pool and manicured garden - they are special indeed.
I am not sure why you describe the bedroom and bathroom as enclosed. The bathroom has 2 windows that easily slide open. The bedroom has 3 large windows that easily slide open to allow a comfortable cross breeze and air circulation.
It seems that you chose to keep the windows closed for some reason. I will include a note about this in the visitor binder going forward but I sincerely thought that opening windows that are well-screened would be common sense.
We do recommend keeping the door closed when you are not in the room simply to keep out any bugs. We have little issue with mosquitoes as you can see from the vast majority of our reviews dating back several years. This is one of the features that makes the Villa Hermosa special in relation to other parts of Costa Rica - the lack of bugs or mosquitoes.
We are sorry that you found the bed to be hard but the mattress is in fact of top quality and most of our guests enjoy a the large king mattress and find it quite comfortable.
I can guarantee you that nobody would have taken any of your food from the refridgerator as our staff of Misael and Tania are extremely respectful of our guests and provide only top-notch service.
Otherwise, the property is well-protected and we have no safety issues whatsoever.
It is important to drive carefully on the road, but this is a something that most of our guests gain a handle of within the first or second drive, and yes, there are some bumps to avoid, but they are easily recognizable after 1-2 drives.
I do apologize greatly for the issue of the calendar sync error. My goal was to save you money by booking privately and this did in fact cause a caldendar sync error so I will be sure to not make this mistake in the future as it makes syncing my various calendars more complicated.
Please keep in mind that we accurately describe our property as not being a luxury resort or hotel, but a calm and relaxing unique getaway where you can experience the wonders of nature while experience comfort and peace. We have had only 4/5 star reviews so I think the part of the issue here was simply that I was travelling on business for the last month and was not able to attend to your needs in person.
It is also possible that our place simply was not what you were looking for which does happen. But again, the vast majority of guests find just what they are looking for.
