Home away from home
Loved the house and location. It perfectly fit my needs. The owner is thoughtful and attentive and made everything easy. I hope I don't need to move out of my house again, but if I do, I know where to go.
Every day of the 4+ months of having you as a guest were terrific. Thank you very much, Eric.
Great location but photos are NOT accurate
I have been on both sides of VRBO numerous times and this is the 1st time I have had a negative experience either as tenant or landlord. If you're looking for 2 bedroom/1 bath in a great central location with a lovely tree covered backyard, this place is for you. Other than that, you might be disapopinted.
The site shows this as a 3/2 when the house is actually a 2/1 and the 1/1 is a seperate studio out back. The photos definitely highlighted the positives but did not at all accurately depict the condition of the property, the furniture or lack of routine maintenance.
Unfortunately, dealing with the landlord only worsened the situation. A few examples; maintenance requests, even the missing fence slats that were gone when I moved in, to the sewage back up in the seperate back house which I never used yet continued to flush 2x per week at her request, were blamed on me misusing or abusing her property.
The tumbler broke off the front door lock when I came home one night and when I notified her of this, she offered via text to reimburse me for the service call. Then she wrote on the VRBO site about how I had drilled the lock without her permission which damaged her door and I had tried to hide the evidence and that she should charge me for the repair.
In her defense, I made the mistake of installing a ring towel holder in the bathroom. I thought it was an improvement over the bare nail head that she said was a 'towel rack'. I sent her photos asking her is she wanted me to leave or remove and repaint when I vacated. The wrath from that constitited no less that 3 feet of texts about how I was permanantely scarring her 1930's house by my flagrant abuse. (yes, I saved all of my communications w her).
In hindsight, I should have paid attention to the negative review posted before I moved in instead of believing her that it was the 'tenant from hell' and it was all his fault.
The house has great potential and is in a prime location.
Thank you but something doesn't add up; no one so dissatisfied would request and pay to extend their stay, as you did. You reviewed the same advertisement as hundreds of others, reviewed property details on the phone and also drove by before booking it, but still you booked the wrong property, and made an $8000 error doing so. You were not penalized for your $8000 error. When you didn’t carry the key to the back door and had a locksmith drill and destroy the front door lock to let yourself in, while back up keys were inches away, you expected me to pay for the locksmith, and the new lock, simply because you didn’t carry your key. Worst of all was when you defaced this historic home by installing not just one, not just two, not just three, but four unsightly hardware fixtures, and left those damages and more in your wake. Although you also never returned all keys and locks thus had to be changed, I will always be glad you are gone.
Not representative of the listing - pictures do not represent poor conditions of the dwelling.
The property is in extreme disrepair. The pictures on HomeAway must be from 15 years ago when the owner said she purchased it. We rented the property for 2 months as we transitioned to our new home. We had hoped this would be a relaxing time for us after the stress and work of selling and moving out of our home. Instead we were subjected to unacceptable conditions:
Window screens are rotting off, allowing bugs to enter through the windows. Windows are dirty and covered in cobwebs. Leaking roof. Roaches and ants found in kitchen and bath of both main house and guest room. Doors to guest room don’t open if it rains. They are glass doors; the owner advised that we throw our body weight into it to get it to open. Problems with electrical wiring lead to electrical shock when showering. When attempting to repair wiring repair man reported large amounts of rat droppings in attic . We requested for owner to send pest control, but they never came. Unable to run shower and kitchen faucet at the same time- risk for scalding or freezing water to shower. Back yard fence rotted and falling over. Furniture was old and breaking. Owner was responsive to text when problems occurred, however would try to deflect responsibility and blame the problems on us. She repeatedly made statements like “ that has never happened in 15 years at this property “. We filed complaints with HomeAway, but never received calls back. Completely disappointed given
the large amount of money we were charged.
I am so glad you posted a review. Although most guests at all of my properties are a privilege to serve, you exemplified why cities ban furnished rentals. After instant booking a property that advertises parking for 2 cars, Scott checked in announcing they would consume twice as much parking, for 4 cars. They then helped themselves for two months to neighboring off street parking while never once even thanking those neighbors. When workers were on premises Scott and his dogs ambushed them, and workers left, unwilling to finish. Four attempts with four different workers to resolve one minor grounding issue all failed until after Scott checked out; after Scott was finally gone that issue was quickly and easily resolved in one attempt. His family apparently made mountains of garbage, too, because they requested a doubling of trash services. I shudder to think of what neighbors endured during Scott’s stay. Then while locals were literally drowning in their cars from 100 year floods, Scott was instead obsessed with one swollen door; that door has been there for decades and dozens who have posted reviews used that same door during rains with no complaint. Scott did $300 of preventable damage to original hardwood floors, blamed a neighbor’s dog for fence damage that happened with his dogs, demanded removal of $540 of mature landscaping that had been there 10 years with no problems, Scott’s stay required 20% more post check out cleaning than others. Dozens have posted 5 star reviews of this property and my other properties, and stayed for much longer than two months. Some guests have become friends. The difference is that a handful of people are simply not worth having on premises for any amount of money, and for that description Scott qualifies. To anyone like Scott, please do all of us at Homeaway and associated neighborhoods, and workers everywhere, a favor and stay in a hotel where you will be kicked out immediately or charged in keeping with your consumption and damages. Lastly, quite to the contrary of the photos being outdated, the thumbnail/first photo for this advertisement was taken in July 2019.
The Next Best Thing To Home
Everything about Deirdre's property was thoughtfully set up for a long stay, with all the amenities and comforts we could have wanted. I especially enjoyed working on the screened porch out back. We were staying in the property while getting ready to move into our permanent home in Austin, and the central location of Deirdre's property was convenient to major arteries; getting around was easy. Deirdre anticipated any questions we might have had and answered them with clear check-in instructions. It was a pleasure to stay at the cottage, and I happily recommend it!
Thank you with all my heart for being perfect guests. I hope you love your new home.
Perfect and Central Location for Our Family
Our family of 4 (myself, husband, and two kids ages 3 and 6) stayed in this little cottage during some renovations to our home in south Austin. It was a perfect location for us to get to all of our normal routines and activities around Austin throughout our time there. This location cannot be beat, whether you are visiting for months at a time or temporarily relocating yourself in Austin!
The owner was above and beyond with her customer service and attention to every little detail for our stay...The house was clean, cozy, and comfortable! From the superior linens to the lawn service, nothing has been neglected. We ate many of our dinners on the screened porch out back and really enjoyed the private backyard along with the spring weather here in Austin. The back bedroom and bathroom were a nice spot for my husband to take calls for work, as it was very private and quiet out there.
There are many things to do (and eat!) right in this neighborhood. Our kids loved being so close to Ramsey Park/playground, I loved having close access to easy weeknight dinner options (mainly from Cafe Express or Central Market), my husband loved the coffee from Anderson's, and our whole family is now thoroughly addicted to the delicious cinnamon rolls at Russell's. And of course, you cannot stay without at least one visit to the original Kerbey Lane.
We loved our time here and would absolutely recommend this cottage to friends or families visiting Austin. We cannot say enough great things about it!
It makes my day that you were pleased. Thank you for your very detailed review and for being lovely guests.
