If you can book this one - do it!
This property was fantastic! I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE IT! If you love old and well-loved - you will want to stay here. Tom and I spent hours on the back porch looking out at the trees and the water and relaxed in a way we haven't ever done before. Great owner and a great manager - both friendly and efficient. Five stars all the way!
Location is fantastic, and was accurately described. We had lots of problems with the toliet, it kept clogging up, which was frustrating, the caretaker Judy and her husband were quick to come out and did snake it, but still clogged. Thank God my husband is handy, but not his favorite thing to do, especially on vacation. The shower was disappointing, and the water stream is like a trickle. Otherwise we had a good time and loved the sunsets❤️
Never Going Back
The property description says that there is a large sandy beach in the back of the property. When we were there, the beach did not exist - only debris. We had to walk across the neighbors backyard to get to the public beach. The ferry drive is 10 minutes away, not 4 minutes. It says there is internet and he does not provide anyway to connect to the internet. I did not appreciate having to pick up the trash that the raccoon had gotten into.
The "debris" you spoke of was what was left of the beach grasses and plants that were washed into the lake due to an almost record rise in the water levels this winter. This natural process occurs to some extent every time the level goes up, not down. The level goes up the colder the winter (more lake ice reduces the natural evaporation) Last winter was very cold, particularly the first half.
There is no manmade "debris" and no owner can do anything about this act of nature. Yes, it is true that both public beaches on the bay were free of any "debris", because the State of Michigan allows municipalities to apply for permits to remove their dune grass (but not us private owners), and they do, so these beaches rarely have any problem. We are told not to disturb beach vegetation for any reason, and can be fined if we do.
About the racoons, our property manager tells everyone to use the cans provided, with lids fastened, not simply bag and leave under the entry porch. I understand you complained to her and she made the trip from Cheboygan to help clean the area.
The drive to the ferry docks is less than three miles (anyone can check this on google maps, so sorry if you took the wrong road (possible), or are just a very slow driver going to the farthest dock. We often ride our bikes to the ferries and then have them for the island without additional charge. Anyone interested in this can ask regarding the route along the straits roads (nice view of the old cottages on Wawatam beach and you end at the fort), or the fastest route that uses some of the bike trail coming from Petosky.
Such a quirky place with the Best Location!!
Absolutely wonderful place right in the perfect location. Within 5 to 10 minutes from all the areas main attractions! Clean, cute, and historical with a great beach area! Very well taken care of for it's age! Thank you to the owners!!
This is a great place and just as described. It's a true vintage experience and the view is incredible. Staying at the cottage is a real get away from the frenetic pace of current life. Relaxed in every way and just what we needed.
The views from this property are amazing. Nothing better than sitting by a fire on the beach and watching the sunset into Lake Michigan!
