Rustic, but comfortable cottage right on the lake.
We had a very nice stay. Price was very reasonable and this place makes for a perfect cozy getaway. It rained all weekend so we weren't able to take advantage of the canoe and kayak. If we had, I wasn't looking forward to fitting it down the stairs and then lugging it back up the steep bank and not sure I would have been able. I haven't stayed in a placed that required you to clean at the end of your stay and there was ample warning about this. I appreciate keeping costs down (as most rentals require you to pay $150 or more thats tacked on to your price); however, if you are going to require your guests to clean, I suggest that you make sure there are enough paper towels so they can do an adequate job. I kept worrying I was going to run out.
Andrew, Thanks for taking the time to write a review. The feedback is very helpful to me and other travelers. First, I think I forgot to offer you the option of having someone clean the cabin for you. It would have cost $200. Having offered it to 22 new guests earlier in the season, and having them all prefer to keep the cost down by cleaning up themselves, I got out of the habit of offering it. My bad.
I was in the cabin after you, and there actually was another roll of paper towels on the top shelf in the bathroom hidden behind the extra toilet paper, and there were nine more rolls under the bed in a rolling bin. There is always a learning curve when you visit a new place. I wish you had texted me asking if there were more, so I could have helped you out with that. I don't mind being texted and my number is displayed in the cabin.
Honestly, my expectation is that folks would use the sponges I provide under the kitchen sink and in the bathroom. There were many clean sponges in both places.
It is true that getting the kayak and canoe up and down the stairs can be challenging, especially alone, and especially because our kayak is a high quality, heavier, stable Old Town kayak suitable for fishing. We are working on finding a way to keep them down by the water, but it will require permitting from the LGA which means it is not an easy fix. People who rent for a week usually leave them down on, or tied to, the dock which limits the hard part to once a week. Until we get that fixed, I guess folks will need to bring a strong friend with them ,or hope there is one renting the other cabin. Most folks don't mind lending a hand with that.
Thanks for giving us a try. I am sorry the weather didn't cooperate. Lee
A beautiful place to relax.
I stayed at this location for three days with my GF. The view is amazing, it is very quiet, usually the only sound we could hear was the waves lapping against the shore. The cabin was more than enough for two people, clean, and tasteful.
Highly recommended. Lee has easily accessible, quick to respond, and very friendly.
We should all follow your example and take a long weekend to relax. I think that having a simple and comfortable place to stay while soaking ourselves in beautiful scenery is the perfect remedy to the busy, stressful lives we all tend to lead.
This cabin is unique in that it hangs over the bank, thus its name Overbank, so that you can hear the waves lapping below .... even from the bedroom and loft. Just 20-30 feet back and you wouldn't be able to hear them any more. We are grateful that Granddad built it in 1955 before there were laws prohibiting building within 50 feet of the lake. Our family and our guests all love it which is why some of them have been coming back each summer for decades. It is rare to find an open week in July and August, but there is a lot of time open in the Spring and Fall which are my favorite seasons because the lake is so quiet and peaceful with just the calls of Loons and incredible fishing in the Spring and the Canadian geese and the mountains dressed in colorful leaves in the Fall.
Travelers, Jared is a newly independent architect that I am considering using on a project. If you need one too, email me and I can give you his contact information.
All the Best to you Jared,
The house is beautifully located right on the lake. Sitting on the porch is comfortable and relaxing, with nice breezes and the lapping of water. The place is very small but for two people it was fine. Only negative was smoke from the outside firepit of the house behind us, but that was one night.
I am glad you could relax and enjoy the porch and that gorgeous view.
Compared to our other one-room log cabin, this one is big! Haha! It has a bedroom and 4 twin beds in the loft. But you are right, it is very comfortable for a couple.
Unfortunately, when the sunsets and the cool mountain air rolls down the mountain it brings the smoke from the fire ring right past this cabin and out onto the lake. You have to shut the back windows and door, but some smoke will come around to the porch. I wish I knew a way to stop this without getting rid of the fire ring which people love, or adding a high smoke stack which is out of the question. Travelers beware, if you have any lung issues or this would be annoying, either take the back cabin #263457 on HomeAway, or pick another place. I think we'll be keeping the fire ring especially since it is not used every night.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review and giving us and travelers this important feedback. All the Best, Lee
Beautiful and well maintained
Haha! I love your brevity!! "Awesome" sums it up. Lake George truly is "The Queen of American Lakes" with it's crystal clear water. Where else are you swimming in drinking water?
Thank you for appreciating our efforts to provide a comfortable and well equipped cottage while you enjoy the beautiful setting. We're looking forward to having you come again.
Awesome as usual
Wonderful! We love how people love the place as much as we do and come back for more each year. I give most of the credit to the setting. It is hard to beat a crystal clear lake that is surrounded by mountains and has a little island to explore. Just add some friends around the fire with some beer and wine and that pretty much guarantees a great time! Look forward to hearing from you next year.
