A secluded, elegant and cold gite run by delightful hosts
We stayed in this gite for a week in mid May. It was wonderfully secluded with a fabulous pool, and the interior decor of the house was excellent - done out in a Portuguese style - but there are issues that need attention: (1) There were so many ornaments (very dirty - they had not been properly cleaned for a long time), that you had nowhere to put things without moving everything away. (2) The ornaments were also fragile and we were continually worried we would break them. (3) No bins were provided in the toilets, which is not good for ladies when there is a bio-loo. (3) The shower leaks all over the electric (!) cooker in the room below, which is really dangerous. (4) The ventilaton for the bathroom and toilet was faulty. (5) Although we knew the fire was for decorative purposes only, the gite was freezing even with the heating on full blast and when this was pointed out to the owner, he shrugged, but otherwise didn't do anything about it. Using four electric heaters (two downstairs in the open plan space, 1 in bathroom and 1 in bedroom) cost us an extra 80 euros (!) - staggeringly expensive. We pay that for a whole month of heating in the UK. It didn't warm the gite pleasantly and there was no ambience at all. (6) The lighting in the living room was too gloomy for reading. (7) The bedding was not warm enough either, so we had to take things from other bedrooms, which will not work for a family at this time of year. It seems the French have no tog -rating on their duvets - they were basically Summertime duvets only. I feel strongly you should not accept off-season bookings if you are not providing the right facilities. ...
However, the French host was totally charming and helpful, making suggestions for local things to do, and we found the area interesting - a visit to the local tapestry museum at Aubusson blew us both away (even my husband) - the tour to the restoration studio is a 'must' for those who love arts, antiques and beautiful buildings. For me this was truly special and I felt quite emotional walking into the room to meet the embroiderers and see them work - to be able to touch ancient tapestries from French palaces, things I have previously only ever seen on TV or looked at behind glass display cases, was the fulfillment of a lifetime dream. The town is also beautiful - there is free parking at the museum, and a restaurant nearby for lunch, right by the bridge around the corner from the museum. You will want to take pics of it all.
