Very nice place to get away
Rugged & Dark
Curt has some incredible property out at the end of the road in Terlingua. The views are outrageous and the solitude factor is pretty darn high. Curt was very helpful in getting me directions (cell service is limited/nonexistent, so don't rely on GPS while you're on the road) and recommending some scenic areas I might want to check out while I was down there. But I knew what I was there for...the pristine night skies! This area of Terlingua is situated in an exceptionally light pollution-free area of the country, so anyone who likes to stargaze or dabble in some astrophotography will be handsomely rewarded during a new moon. The smaller cabin is perfect for a solo traveler and I enjoyed waking up to the burros outside my front door every morning. This is a rugged retreat and if you need to unplug from things for a while this little cabin is highly recommended.
Sweet and Simple
It was exactly as we had expected to be. We were prepared for the off-roading as that's part of our expedition. The drive to the property is off-road, so be prepared to take your SUV. We loved it, it was perfect for my husband and I. The animals added an extra sweet treat to the experience. You'll want to wake up to the view, it is all worth it.
I just wanted to clarify that there is a road up to my ranch it's just rocks and dirt. An- Marie and Walter are adventurers and they had the vehicle to prove it but you can make it here in your Honda. One of my vehicles is a vintage 1990 Cadillac Allante convertible sports car and it makes it just fine. An-Marie and Walter are the type of people we like to see coming to the Big Bend, They get it! You know the appreciation of the views and respecting the land and the animals. Any host would be lucky to have them as guests. I'll look forward to their return.
cabin was a piece of fecal material
the picture of our cabin was not what the cabin was like. it was no more than 350 square ft. the original picture had a jacuzzi in it. there was not one. there was no towel racks, no place to put up groceries, no place to prepare meals, no place to sit outside, because the burros always wanted to hang with us. it was so bad
I NOTICED THAT ALSO!!!!! but oddly enough the "cabin that was a piece of fecal material" seemed to correct itself after this guest left. The guest stated the cabin was no more than 350 sq. ft. but guess what?? That is why this cabin is listed as SPECTACULAR MOUNTAIN VIEWS ("small cabin") IN BIG LETTERS on this site. It does have enough room to cook(hot plate, convection oven, coffee maker, microwave), eat, sleep(a queen size bed), watch tv(satellite direct tv WITH movie channals AND wifi), use the bathroom and have a hot shower, just to name a few. As I have stated before, if you are coming to the Big Bend just to sit around indoors and read or count the number of towel racks, you're missing the point. I would suggest you save your money and just stay home. My cabins are economy cabins (so i'm a slum lord I guess..... LOL.) This cabin is THE least expensive vacation rental on vrbo in all of the Big Bend at the time of this writing.
My four room cabin is also the least expensive in its category. In the interest of full disclosure there are a few other cabins here that are the same price. I like to think my cabins offer more for the price than the others. You know, MORE BANG FOR THE BUCK!!! We have 320 acres here, a fenced compound, Swafford road literally ends at our gate (so there is no traffic), We have THE darkest skies in the Big Bend for star gazing because of no neighbors, no traffic and it's quiet. You can actually hear coyotes howling in the distance and the deer hooves clicking on the rocks, I've even heard the horse and burros chewing from my house up on top of the hill while they were down by the guest cabins. In spite of this guests allegations of no hot tub we have the best view from a hot tub in all of the Big Bend and a deck next to the hot tub that hangs out over our western cliff. The hot tub is not inside a cabin with no view as this guest seemed to want, it sets in a dug out notch of our western cliff. We're not the Permian Basin here,( we are THE BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK AND THEY DON'T PUT NATIONAL PARKS IN AN UGLY PART OF THE PLANET....) we actually put our hot tubs in THE most scenic spot on the property. We don't hide them behind a wall in a small back yard. WE HAVE 320 ACRES, WE DON"T EVEN HAVE A SMALL BACK YARD!!! WE ARE WIDE OPEN SPACES BABY!!! I guess this guests' mother never taught him that hot tubs are better outside. Now about my burros, AKA, donkeys, AKA, jack asses, I love them and this is their home. I get more positive feedback from guests than negative so consider yourself lucky if they choose you to interact with. You'd think on 320 acres this guest could find a place to move his chair where there weren't any burros. And I know just the place... it's the hot tub and deck on our western cliff. Look forward to meeting all you new guests who appreciate mother nature. curt
The pictures in the advertisement were some what deceiving. There was no hot tub present. Somewhat smaller than expected. There were some simple things that should have been present but were not. No towel racks in bathroom, no toilet paper holder, no hooks for jackets, no towel holder in kitchen area. WiFi comes an goes. My husband enjoyed his time there, very peaceful, sunrise an sunset were beautiful. Overall time spent was good. Thank you.
As a published photographer I take all the photos myself. We do have THE most beautiful hot tub in all of the Big Bend. It sets in a dug out notch that is part of our western cliff for the best view of sunset in all of the Big Bend. In addition to the hot tub we have a large deck that hangs out over that same west cliff next to the hot tub with lawn furniture for sun bathing and/or watching sunset. Exactly what is Ms. Dennis implying, that the photos of the interior of the small cabin were photo shopped? That there really is no bed in the cabin, we just air brushed it in the photos. I list two cabins on this site this cabin is listed in BIG letters as SPECTACULAR MOUNTAIN VIEWS (SMALL CABIN). I don't see how that is deceiving. RE: no towel racks, no toilet paper holder, no hooks for jackets etc. etc. ( it was 98 degrees while they were here) I think that speaks volumes about about how she even thought about coat hooks in 98 degree weather. I think what we have here is just a very negative person who came to one of our country's most beautiful nation parks (a national treasure if you will) and all she could manage to take away from her trip was " there was no place to hold my toilet paper".
Loved it and will return!
We booked this room for our wedding night after we got married in the Terlingua Ghost town. After a call to explain directions a few days before our trip, we met Kurt at the gate to his property so he could let us in and fill us in on all of the property details. He's a great person and we spent quite a bit of time talking to him about the area and life in general. He recommended a nice ~ 4 mile hike that took us to views of the Chisos and Boquilla Canyon - awesome sunrise views! He has a few friendly burros and a horse that roam the property as well as plenty of wildlife (we saw a bobcat crossing the road to the room early in the morning!). We had the small room which was exactly as described - a small room with all of the amenities you need in the desert - shower, AC, sink, hot plate/microwave and cooking supplies, and a nice soft bed. There's a cable TV too but who's watching TV our here!? My only complaint was we only booked 1 night there but next time we will stay longer!
