Tiny cottage. Cobwebs everywhere.
Upon arriving we pulled up and my husband was moaned at about parking on the pebbled drive and told to park on tarmac. It wasnt clear which gate it was to open so it was an easy mistake. We was not told that owners lived on site, we would have prefered more privacy, especially that the owner entered into the cottage without telling us to fix wifi whilst we were out! Made us feel really uncomfortable with our valuables left there. Very close to main road so alot of noise . It is an upside down cottage- it literally felt like we were stuck in a little flat, two tiny windows so was very stuffy. Fair enough it is a converted barn but the amount of cobwebs there were! Even on lamps, kettle and other places that really were obvious dusting places! You share a courtyard with another cottage which you are not told about- if another family of the bigger cottage was there and not very nice then ypu would have to put up with that on your holiday. The weather wasn't amazing so it was hard to dry my washing, that I had to hand wash may I add as there was no washing machine! Also, the heating is controlled by the owners so i couldn't turn the heating on for a bit during the day to dry the kids clothes! The wifi wasn't working and i was made out to be stupid as they just kept telling me the same password. After two emails, they looked into it and something was wrong with the password they had given me- this was then sorted out promptly but the owner had unnecessarily entered our cottage without our consent when they could have emailed me the password. The area was boring apart from a few theme parks within 40 minutes drive. We have holidayed in a beautiful cottage in a beautiful area of north devon and this was entirely the opposite. We were booked to stay here for two weeks but we actually decised to leave after 9 days as the cottage was so unenjoyable. We did not look forward to returning to the cottage each day, we ended up heading to poole for five days and purchasing our own holiday home! Much better of a holiday! Good points- well equiped kitchen, good effort made in kids bedroom and i loved the colour of the door and window frames. I would definately reccommend north devon more than south! Im sorry, I hate to leave a bad review but i honestly felt disapointment the moment we entered as the photos look so much bigger on the advert than in reality.
Thank you Achim, it was great to welcome you and your family. I am so glad you loved our 18th Century Barn. You are welcome to return when you next get the chance.
Kind wishes, Wendy
A little slice of Devon
Well located for East Devon. Just off A38 which makes coast and the moors very accessible. We even headed to Cornwall for a day. Although near the road, Milk Churn is very quiet. Property is very clean, modern and well kitted out. Loads of DVDs for when TV has repeats and you want to get away from depressing news programs. Having the heating on for us after a wet and windy day on Dartmoor was especially welcome. Strongly recommended.
Very nice barn conversion
Milk Churn Cottage is really cosy and is very nicely furnished and equipped. Location ideal for exploring the area. We had a great week. Wendy was lovely, making sure everything was ok and suggesting places to visit and where to eat. Would have been 5 stars but for the A38 being close by (obviously, there is nothing Wendy can do about that of course !!) - not a problem at all when in the barn due to the thick walls, but a little bit too noisy for us when sitting out in the courtyard. This did not detract in any way though from us having a lovely stay.
Got lots of writing done!
We had a really comfortable week's stay at Milk Churn Cottage this Easter. The high vaulted ceiling in the kitchen/lounge area gave a light and spacious feel to the accommodation. Everything was clean and well maintained, beds comfy and shower really good too. Wendy couldn't have been more helpful. It's easy to switch off with so many lovely Dartmoor walks on our doorstep - again Wendy recommended some excellent ones nearby, along with dog-friendly gasto-pubs. Riverford Organics cafe and farm shop (called Ben's) are only a couple of minutes drive away so perfect for stocking up on quality provisions. The close proximity to the A38 didn't trouble me at all - the birdsong drowned out much of the road noise! The wifi was a bit hit and miss though so I needed to get a dongle to aid my research and writing, so I'd recommend that if you need reliable connection. Other than that I can highly recommend Mick Churn Cottage and would be glad to return some day soon.
