HISTORY
Ameno, or as you can read on ancient parchments " Meni or Meno" was already populated during the middle bronze age recent excavations, directed by the superintendence of Turin, with the help of local archeologic groups, have discovered the pavement of a hut, 3600 years old. The first written news about the "Riviera" date back to the V° century: they speak about the safety of the castle in St. Giulio's isle, built by the bishop of Novara in order to, defend the population of the "Riviera" from the barbarians' invasions.
When the Longobards arrived, in the IV° century, the bishops were chased off and the "Riviera" became part of a dukedom for about two centuries. The descend upon Italy of the Franks caused the end of the Longobardic domination; the dukedoms were abolished, the "Riviera" became part of the "comitee of the Carolingian chancellery" in Pombia in this period the bishop had no Jurisdiction on the "Riviera" but very likely the isle and the castle of St. Giulio, as well as some estates in the diocese, belonged to him. In the X° cent. the Bishop of Novara acquired new power and the title of count, with a diploma dated July 29, 962 by emperor Otto. This fact caused many fights for the dominion of the "Riviera" only in the XIII century. The count bishops got the uncontested dominion on the Riviera. The first lord was elected. He was also the judge and the "gran maestro di campo".
The "Riviera" was divided into two parts: eastern and western many villages belonged to it: Ameno, Armeno, Arola, Artò, Alzate, Boleto, Bolzano, Bugnate, Cesara, Coiro, Gargallo, Miasino, Nonio, Orta, Pella, Pettenasco, Pogno, San Maurizio, Soriso. It had it’s own statute (mostly longobardian laws) Measure and weights. It kept its own autonomy and privileges till the XIX° century.
