ALBENGA and his history :
The Romans founded Albingaunum, after the defeat of the Liguri Ingauni, in the II° century BC. The city became a centre of great importance and improving merchant (Naval Museum preserves the findings of roman ships found in the waters in front of Albenga). In 13th BC was open the way IULIA AUGUSTA connecting Albingaunum to Gaul. After the invasion of the Goths, becomes one of the most important and ancient Diocese.
Wonderful example of romanic architecture are the St.Michael Cathedral, bishop's seat, and the Baptistery (the oldest existing buildig in Liguria). Albenga preserve many roman ruins near the medieval town: the baths, roman bridge, the road Iulia Augusta,the foundation of an aqueduct etc.
